It is said that love is like a
butterfly; if you hold it too tightly it will crush, if you hold it too
loosely it will fly away. There is an abundance of poems written about
butterflies; they seem to go together like cake and ice cream. Many of them
make reference to childhood memories and when I thought about it, I recalled
several times I had chased butterflies across a summer meadow (I still do).
I guess most people have a childhood memory of a butterfly. This Great
Southern White is another one I discovered at the Key West Butterfly
Conservatory. Not as spectacular as some, I was intrigued by the starkness
of the light values and whispers of blues and greens against the deep green
shadows of background foliage.
Reproduced by giclee printing from an
acrylic painting on hardboard.
