Moving like an iron
glacier across the misty calm of the St. Lawrence River on an early spring
morning, this Canadian laker owned by the ULS Corporation is among the last
of a dying breed. Built mostly between 1943 and 1976, these 730 foot
vessels had an average beam of about 75 feet and were designed to carry
grain, coal and ore. The forward pilot house allowed for easier
control while navigating the locks throughout the Great Lakes and Seaway
system.
