The Hotel Champlain originally had
seven cottages in 1890, one of which is depicted here. The McKinley Cottage
was named after President McKinley who used the hotel as a summer White
House in 1897 and 1899, claiming that the clear air and sunshine was
beneficial to his wife who suffered from epilepsy. McKinley was just one of
many presidents and dignitaries who visited this grand hotel on Bluff Point
near the turn of the century. In 1901 President McKinley was shot in
Buffalo, NY and died several days later. A favorite place of the president
at the hotel was an old pine tree where he would often sit and read. Legend
has it that the year McKinley was assassinated, the pine tree was destroyed
by lightning.
The architecturally unique McKinley
Cottage was renovated in 1990 and is now the Childcare Center.
