On a clear day with a sky as blue as angel eyes, you can see the mainland from Monhegan Island, about 11 miles away. A day like this starts out with an atmosphere that is still and crisp. Monhegan's shadow crawls slowly across neighboring Manana Island as the sun swings it's long arc across a summer sky. The air is taut with sound; a creaking door, a distant motor, the splash of oars all combine to create a musical scale upon which a Monhegan day is played.
