The small island of Manana, next to Monhegan, years ago housed a manned Coast Guard station and rescue operation. Today there is only a automated fog horn. To visit the island you have to take a row boat or hire the ferry man to ride you over. He keeps a hand radio in a box near the beach that you can contact him to arrange a ride. His normal hours end around supper time, but I wanted to get some reference photos from Manana of Monhegan at twilight (see painting “View from Manana”) so I hired him to take me over at sunset.
When we returned he let me off at the beach and went to moor his boat. This painting portrays him as he was preparing his dory against a backlit summer sky.. Acrylic on illustration board.
