Life seems to be full of opposites, just about all philosophies have their version of them, whether it be yen and yang or good and evil.
This watercolor painting portrays several symbols of these opposing forces. The delicate light softness of the Day Lily contrasted by the dark hardness of wrought iron. The graceful swaying curves of the flower formed by nature is innately different from the man made straight and controlled quality of the fence. Adding to this contradiction is an element of time. The fleeting short life of the Day Lily as compared to the decades the fence can exist. And finally color itself is a factor, for the purple hues of the background are the opposite or complementary color of the yellow in the flowers.
