The lush green tranquility of a summer morning is depicted in this impressionistic oil painting. It was mid-July; the sun rose to a clear blue day that promised to be hot and humid. I went for an early walk, while some of the night’s coolness was still lingering. I was captivated by the raking light as it penetrated this backyard oasis.
Loose and tight are two terms that painters use to describe style. A tight style is very detailed and a loose one is less detailed. Some unjustifiably believe that a tight style is better, others believe that the opposite is true. It is purely a matter of choice. I am of the persuasion that it is best to paint loose and have it appear to be tight, a feat that is challenging to achieve. This painting is an attempt to do just that.
Reproduced from an oil painting on hardboard.
