Rising early on a Sunday morning before the sun could melt the chill of the night’s air, I walked around the island and was struck by the stark contrast of white aprons hanging on a line against the heavy gray atmosphere of the new day. They were behind the Monhegan House, one of the islands historic Inns and restaurants. Saturday night is one of the busiest and they are often filled to capacity.
As I studied the aprons they seemed to reflect the character of the people who wore them the night before, I felt they symbolized much of about Monhegan as they looked tired and worn and just hanging on.
Reproduced by Giclee printing from a watercolor painting on canvas.
