This is a scene I saw one July evening while driving home through Lisbon, NY. The sun had just dropped over the horizon but a pink glow was still washing the clouds to the east. The ideal landscape with a lushness of evening summer color was too much to resist.
Over the last few years I have been doing more plein air painting- that is painting outdoors on location. This type of painting is usually done faster than studio painting forcing the artist to make decisions quicker so as to be able to finish the work by days end. It often results in a painting that is fresher looking with emphasis on the most important elements of the piece and less on detail. Plein air painting is not always very practical, rain, wind and cold are a few of the obstacles that can make working outside difficult. For this reason many artists work from photographs they have taken back in the comfort of their studios. Evening scenes are most challenging to do outside because of the lack of light. In this case I painted this small oil from my digital photo in my studio on a large screen TV. I set up my easel and painted the same way I would if I had been working outdoors.
