This five story tower sits at the front of “Singer Castle” like a hood ornament on a vintage automobile. It has 4 six foot clock faces and rings every 15 minutes with Westminster Chimes. The Castle was completed in 1904 and was an Island hunting retreat of Fredrick Bourne, president of the Singer sewing machine company. Designed by architect Ernest Flagg, it was built from granite quarried from near by Oak Island.
The 28 room castle sits on a six acre island in Chippewa Bay in the St. Lawrence River. First called Dark Island by the natives because of the dense population of pine trees, it was later named “Jorstadt Castle” by the former owner. It was recently purchased and restored and renamed “Singer Castle”, and is open to the public
