Living along the Seaway you get used to seeing these giant masses of steel lumbering up and down the mighty St Lawrence River. Day and night, rain and shine even through sleet and snow, the 9,470 horsepower diesel engine keeps a steady pace against even the fiercest gale force winds.
But on the day I observed The Algosteel heading up the river, it was a calm, hot and humid mid-summer afternoon. The sun hun acg low in the sky and a thick moisture laded air scattered the back-lit gold glow across the landscape.
The Algosteel was built in 1966 as a Great Lakes bulk carrier. 730 feet in length and a 75 foot beam. She is capable of carrying 27,000 tons of cargo and has a draft of 27 feet.
Reproduced from an acrylic painting on hardboard.
