When I first returned to the St. Lawrence Valley over 25 years ago, for $2.00 worth of gas you could travel the back roads of the county all day. Like a modern explorer, armed with camera and sketch pad, I searched for the road less traveled. It was on one such excursion that this painting was derived. Often a sketch or photograph will lie dormant for years before it is developed into a painting and the exact location is lost between a right turn at the red barn and a left by the fallen tree. I still find it exciting to see what is around the bend on the back roads, where an intimacy of Americana can still be found.
