One can only be held in awe when almost silently, except for the rhythmic drum of the massive engine; pounding like the heart of a dinosaur, a Great Lakes freighter passes by on the St. Lawrence River. Bathed in the pastel twilight of a summer's evening, it threads cautiously through the river islands as the metal giant's shadow, like that of a mountain, engulfs you.
