Seen here is the bell and clock tower of Ogdensburg’s City hall as seen from my house on an early spring evening. The building is on the site of the former Town Hall and Opera House that was completed in 1880. On January 22, 1926 at half past midnight, one of the boilers in the opera house exploded. Two hours later all that was left was four empty walls, the huge ten ton bell crashed into the basement and melted from the intense heat. The much smaller stone City Hall was completed in the 30s.
Today the bell rings on the hour and one ring at half, but I have gotten so used to it, that I only hear it occasionally. Eight Bells all is well.
