Ben Franklin suggested the wild turkey as the national bird because of its keen senses and wariness. Anyone who ever has hunted this foxy foul knows what he was referring to. But as we all know, the powerful bald eagle won, talons down.
Less than 20 years ago the wild turkey was a very rare sight in northern New York but through modern conservation efforts, habitat enhancement, and human respect for nature’s children, they are now a common sight in our woodlands.
This acrylic painting was commissioned by St. Lawrence Explosives Corp. and Hall Explosives Inc. for their 1998 Calendar image. 25 prints from the edition have been set aside to be used for promoting environmental and wildlife conservation.
