Like mist on water, so is the timelessness of a dream. Rising above a sea of frozen fog is Boldt Castle. Entombed in its cold stone walls are the dreams of its builder George C. Boldt. The dream died in 1904 with the passing of his childhood sweetheart and wife, Louise.
The story of this painting began on December 17, 1986. In an agreement in conjunction with a boat purchase from Horizon Marine I offered to do a St. Lawrence River painting for Mike Chavoustie. At a later date Mr. Chavoustie showed me a photograph he had taken of Boldt Castle on a cold frosty morning that had been used on a calendar, but the negative had been lost and he could no longer make copies. He asked if I could do a painting from his photo; I said I would attempt it. The first one I did was a watercolor that I wasn’t satisfied with. I decided to try again later in oil or acrylic and it went to the back burner. I must have a big stove because it was 23 years before I got back to it and produced this acrylic painting from the recollection of the photo that Mike had given me. Reproduced by giclee printing.
